PRESSED ON OPAQUE YELLOW COLORED VINYL IN A GATEFOLD JACKET WITH JAPANESE STYLIZED INSERT AND DELUXE OBI STRIP*
Sony Legacy Recordings X Get On Down Miles Davis 1980s Reissue Series
Remastered from the original analog tapes
The first live Miles Davis electric band release since the very dark and heavy “Dark Magus” (1977). This album is edited together from live concerts at Boston’s Kix Club. The 2xLP set from 1982 contains reimagined versions of songs from “The Man With the Horn” (1981), tunes from the pre-electric Gil Evans collaboration “Porgy and Bess” (1959), and a dedication to the Boston venue called “Kix”. While this is one of the first live Miles Davis performances in over half a decade it certainly did not show!!! This album features R&B legend Marcus Miller on bass, Mike Stern on guitar, Bill Evans on saxophone, Mino Cinelu on percussion, and electric band alumni Al Foster on drums. Produced and edited by long time Miles collaborator Teo Macero.
Tracklist:
A1 Jean Pierre

This album was monumental to me and my friends when it was released in 1982. We had be listening to Miles (especially the mid 60s quintet) but this live recording from 1981 (and the studio record “The Man with the Horn”) meant that Miles wasn’t done challenging and changing peoples concept of jazz. Miles had not been playing and recording music since 1975, so his return to recording and performing in 1981 was a big deal. This album stirred up a bit of controversy with some people heralding it as THE new direction of jazz and others lambasting it as “that’s not jazz.” I remember my piano teacher at the time, John Elliott, commenting on the innovation of the music and the controversy it caused by saying, “Well, he has done it again.” Saw this band with the addition of John Scofield at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis in the Summer of 1983. Fairly mind blowing. This reissue was released about a week ago. Great sounding pressing on yellow vinyl.
