I first picked this album up on CD, in a secondhand market for a ridiculously low price, some time in the early 90s. I knew nothing about the music of Miles Davis. I liked the cover, thought the music might be funky as per my musical tastes at the time, and I wasn't disappointed. The use of synths on this album are often darkly eerie, always atmospheric, and give it a futuristic feel, even today. It was my introduction to the sounds of John Scofield, and the incredible drumming of Al Foster, both musicians who are now permanent fixtures in my listening habits, in all their various projects. Stand out originals tracks are 'One Phone Call/ Street Scenes', 'Katia' and 'You're Under Arrest', with some great covers coming in the form of 'Human Nature' and 'Time After Time'. Miles' contributions add so much unique flavour to these covers, and so much energy and funkiness to the more urgent fast originals. This was a great entry point into Miles' come back period for me, and lead me to buy everything from that time, including this album again on vinyl. The latest 'Bootleg 7' collection has beautifully produced extended studio sessions from this record and is also very much worth a listen. Still one of my favourite albums from this period of his career, and one of my treasured discs of all time.
